Oblong folio, 25.7 x 30.8 cm, half calf binding with marbled paper over board. The book was rebound in the late 20th century and the original binding is lost. Some pages have been cut out post binding. Paper types include James Whatman the younger (1794), Portal and Bridges (1794) and Edmead and Pine (1795, 1796).
The inside front cover and first flyleaf include a manuscript index to the contents. The first flyleaf is signed "C.E. Austen."
The contents include a single print of solo keyboard music (Muzio Clementi, Sonata Op. XXVI [1791]) bound in the front of the book, followed by separately copied items of manuscript keyboard and vocal (solo and ensemble) pieces.
The datable repertoire appears in printed publications from c.1790 to c.1810, suggesting that most items were copied from the mid-1790s onward. The album is made up of a large variety of different papers, with items copied in several different hands (including those of Jane Austen and Elizabeth Austen, née Bridges, amid other unidentified hands) and with different inks and pens. There is no evident logic to the binding order, and the contents do not always align with paper type (that is, the copying of a musical item often extends over a change to a new batch or leaf of paper). The first flyleaf signature may be that of Cassandra Elizabeth Austen (1773-1845), Jane Austen's sister, and the manuscript index is a good match for her hand. Item 9 (image 041) features a further Austen signature with the first name lost in the gutter. The back flyleaf and inside back cover feature an ink sketch of a horse, and the final movement of item 12 (image 056) includes an ink sketch of a woman's head.
